The Inversion Perversion

Dirty number 9

29th March 2012

I have been following The 52 Pick-Up Project for some time now. I am not sure how I first discovered it but once I did I became hooked and so when Mim contacted me and asked me if I would like to be involved with the project and receive my own card from the deck I was delighted. Actually if I am honest my first reaction was a mixture of fear and star struck awe but once I got over my initial hesitation  and worry about whether I could even begin to do Mim’s project justice I sat and waited patiently for my card to arrive all the way from California.

6 of clubs

The 52 Pick-Up Project is a  collaborative art venture, weekly ritual and performance piece that began July 4th 2011 and will end July 4th 2012.  Every week a card will be “Played” and the documentation  shared on this blog.

The rules of The 52 Pick-Up Project are;

  1. Each card is unique but made from the same original colossal card deck.
  2. Each card must be decorated or transformed in some way without loosing it’s identity.
  3. No card can be kept by “The Player.”
  4. Each card must be gifted or left somewhere as an offering to be ”picked up.”
  5. Transforming (shuffling), using (dealing), and offering (playing) the card must be documented.

Cards can never be bought or sold.

Armed with this knowledge I set about my card, well I set about thinking and looking and watching my card, hoping it would show me the way. I am glad I did because a trick of the light highlighted to me the relationship between the numbers 6 and 9 and so I set about trying to tell their story…. as I see it.

 The Inversion Perversion

What do you see?

Am I me without you?

Are you you without me?

What do you see?

Eyes

Chained to you I live

The Number 6 I be

Clubs is what I am

This is what you see

Angles cast a shadow

Creating another lie

Eyes tricked into seeing

The dirty number 9

Dirty number 9

Hold the mirror higher

Let me see myself

Reflections of a curve

Birthing you in stealth

6 reflecting 9

Forever we are bound

Together in this hand

Playing out this trick

Betting on this plan

pad lock

Freedom is beyond us

We cannot live alone

Existing for each other

My inverted clone

Number 6

Six of clubs reflecting me

Back into my own eyes

A turned, revolved, twisted version

A visual set of lies

6 of clubs

I live as your reflection

And opposite of thee

Without you I am just a number

With you I am set free

playing cards in the woods

Left here to be found

A gate to futures end

A story of a union

A lover and a friend

Left on the gate

What will become of us

Whoever will we be

The number 6 or am I 9?

Look close and you might see

I really like what you’ve done with the card – the mirrors and the chains and the poem to go with it, just great.

I had to read it twice and delurk. The poetry was visual and in the written word. What a amazing challenge and how well you rose to the test. Really beautiful and unique.
