I can see clearly now (the porn is gone)

Tumblr Adult Content image

So it is nearly Xmas and the lovely folks at Tumblr/Yahoo/Verizon have decided to give you a special gift. They are deleting all of the adult content from Tumblr. On December 17th they will delete all content that they deem to be adult in nature.

Now I know some are you are thinking that they are only removing pictures and not words, well I can tell you that I have heard this refrain before and words will be on the chopping block soon. We have, after all been here before and sadly I have yet to be wrong. When Tumblr was sold I predicted that this purge would happen and here we are again.

Why this happens all comes down to money, Apple and Google have removed the Tumblr app from their stores which will cause Tumblrs traffic to plummet and as we have seen repeatedly the only thing these companies care about is their bottom line.

The thought that this might impact creators or people who search for the visual representation of their sexuality is met with this message from Tumblr CEO Jeff D’Onofrio

“As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets,” D’Onofrio wrote. “We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.”

So in other words only the “normal” people get to feel comfortable.

What to do?

Step one is to export your content if you care about what you have created.

To start the process, go to your account settings on the web:

  • Click “Settings” under the account menu at the top of the dashboard (the person silhouette).
  • Select the blog you’d like to export on the right side of the page.
  • Scroll down to the “Export” section and click the “Export [blog name]” button.
  • You’ll see a message indicating that your backup is processing.

When your blog’s content is finished collecting, the processing message will be replaced with a “Download backup” button. Click this button to download a ZIP file of your blog’s exported contents.

If you want to export the contents of more than one of your blogs, you’ll need to initiate this process separately for each blog.

Your blog export may include:

  • A Posts folder, with an HTML file for each post.
  • A Media folder, with the media from your posts, plus any media you’ve uploaded (like in messaging). These files will be in the format you uploaded them in  (JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, and so on).
  • A representation of your blog’s messaging conversations, in XML format.
  • A representation of your blog’s posts, also in XML format.

Note that your backup may take some time to process. Check back on your blog’s settings page periodically to see if it has completed.

You can then decide if you want to post this content on your own hosting.

Self Hosting

What makes sites like Tumblr and Blogger and WordPress.com so popular is that they make it simple to have a website. What makes them so terrible is that you are subject to their whims about your content. They will kick you off, please don’t ignore that last bit because it is true. They will throw you under the bus and delete all of your content without a second thought if it puts any money at all in jeopardy. I have had to save 100’s of bloggers websites and content when this happens so I am speaking from experience.

Buy hosting and take them out of the equation. It isn’t fool proof, you need to do some things to be safe even if you are self hosted, but if you do it right you are much safer.

1. Buy a domain name, do it with a different company than you buy your hosting from. That way if something happens you still have your content. Do NOT buy a .uk domain

Adrian Short gives the best explanation as to why to avoid them here

The people who run the .uk domain want it to be what they think of as a “respectable neighbourhood” online. Consequently, they are opposed to people having private registrations (ie name/address withheld). It’s only the GDPR (EU law) for now that makes that possible.
If/when the GDPR ceases to apply to the UK, .uk domains will presumably revert to where they were: all registrants’ names public, addresses/contact details only withheld for “personal” domains at the sole discretion of the registry. And they can revoke that at any time, and did.
In other words, .uk has a history of doxxing its own customers and has zero concept of privacy and consent.

A bit of the history: and that’s how it went until the GDPR came in, when they changed their policy to full whois privacy for everyone because the law forced them to stop being dreadful.

So buy a domain name that is a bit safer to save you that headache, and be sure that you get privacy so that your name and address and phone number don’t turn up on the internet for people to find.

2. Buy self hosting, but READ the AUP(Acceptable Use Policy) and TOS(Terms of Service) to make sure they are adult friendly or at least adult neutral. All of our content is currently hosted in Canada. Revist those documents to make sure they haven’t changed, we had a great host that was bought by another company and terminated adult content hosting. I do prefer hosts that offer free SSL and that is most of them these days

3. Back up your content and move it off the server, even if they offer a free service with your hosting, don’t rely on anyone but you!

How much does this cost?

I can buy mysexyblog.net for £10.18 (USD $12.95) a year with free privacy

I can buy a hosting plan that would work for most bloggers for £3.28 (USD$4.17) if I pay for 1 years hosting. That is £39.36 a year for hosting plus the domain name which comes to £49.54 a year which is less than a £1 a week for a website.

But I suck at tech

We all start that way, I was not born knowing any of this stuff, and like you I learned how to Tumbl, Tweet and use all the other things that have come along the way. You can do this too. There are lots of people just like me who are happy to answer questions and share what we have learned and if you really really need more help than that I have always offered an extremely low rate specifically for sexbloggers to set a website up for you.

Be your own Tumblr for adult content

Great overview of the Tumblr situation. FWIW, I’ve already heard that photos depicting clothed people in BDSM collars, etc. are being flagged for removal, so it doesn’t seem unlikely that words are too far behind. I agree that self-hosting one’s blog is the way to go. This is what my partner and I do. We have a lot more control over our content that way.

    Thanks Michael. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the info. Helpful. Have used the same hosting and bought my domain names from the same company forever, and I have never looked at their TOS. Now that I am writing erotica regularly, I need to look at those. THANKS!

O gosh – I am only temporarily safe it seems. Was waiting for x-mas break to get switched over to self hosting, better get on with it methinks! Great post, but I suspect I’ll need to get more advice from you … thanks in advance!

  • Lola & H.H.

You two are the best! Very good advice.

  • Hella Kinetic

See. I know how to code things, and perhaps more importantly, how to hack a bit of reality. I’m far more vocal in other universes. But seeing as I can only find empathy and depth in the erotic poetry and horror community, I’m lit. And these corporate drones don’t want me to be lit. Oh no.

Love you all for your actually nourishing works. I mean that.
