“It was not a haunting. It was possession and not even that, but something she couldn’t even begin to describe. The creation of an afterlife, furnished with the marrow and the bones and the neurons of a woman, made of stems and spores.”
― Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Mexican Gothic)
I read a lot. So far this year nearly 100 books. Mostly fiction but 16 non-fic books too. The quote above is taken from a book I finished last weekend. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It is set in Mexico in the 1950’s and essentially a haunted house horror story. The writing is brilliant. Atmospheric and haunting, creating a sense of creeping unease in the first 60% of the book which is then replaced with chilling horror. It is probably not in my top ten of books of the year, I have read some really excellent stuff, but I did enjoy it and was a great spooky season read.
So why this picture for this book. Because the book is about things looking mostly normal at first glance but then as you look more realising that you were wrong and something strange and unsettling is happening. You should probably leave, definitely look away but you can’t, she can’t, she stays or is made to…. You will have to read it to find out…

I really like your literary references – always have.
Your photos … and the way you edit them … are always wonderfully creative and stunningly evocative (and pro-vocative). Always love them, always admire them.
As I do your ability to read 100 books in ten months … I don’t know where you find the time, and the concentration! Both … well ALL if you include the photo-skills … are well beyond me lol !!!
Anyway, this post is wonderful as always!!!
