This is the misery stick; the gift that keeps on giving. A fairly innocent looking thing at first glance but in the right hands and used in the right way there is nothing remotely innocent about it at all. It is a 13 inch piece of 1mm thick carbon fibre rod which some thoughtful person has crafted a neat little handle onto. It is highly flexible, virtually unbreakable piece of kit.
The first time I ever laid eyes on one I was instantly curious but also nervous in equal measures. Most instruments of torture give themselves away the moment you see them but this one…. well this one appeared to masquerading as a teeny tiny bendy stick.
Of course the clue is in that last sentence with the word; bendy. Because it is bendy it means that someone can hold the handle fairly near your skin, bend the rod back and release! Depending on how close you are to the skin, the angle you hold it and how far you bend it, it will either leave an interesting pink line, a red angry welt or even a bloody streak. This teeny tiny little stick really does pack a punch and the reason it is called the gift that keeps on giving is because the initial sting is nothing compared to the hot burning rush of prickly poison that seems to flood through your skin for a good long while afterwards.
Sounds horrible doesn’t it? But it’s not… not really, well ok, maybe a bit but I love it. I love that horrible moment of anticipation before he releases it. I love the shock of the sting that hurts like hell and I LOVE the burning heat in my skin that lingers afterwards but most of all I love the marks it leaves. They are vicious and angry and blood-red and sometimes, like the ones on my thigh from August, they can still be seen weeks later.
Not so innocent now right?
