The prompt for Sinful Sunday this week was suggested by Annie Savoy during a podcast I recorded with her last year. This is what she said:

“To see if people would do a picture without any editing at all. You can’t crop it, filter it, (watermarks is OK) It would be really interesting because I feel as though with digital photography especially it is very difficult to trust your eye because you figure you can fix it after the fact and so if you are just going to take a picture and post that pictures without any editing at all. Does it change the way you take a picture? Would you pay more attention? Or would you set up more carefully? Does it make you look at all the corners of the picture to make sure there is nothing there you want to edit out afterwards?”

The thing I realised when planning to take these pictures is that lots of these things I do pretty much in all my images. I think it comes from attending my local camera club because one of the things that was a recurring theme with lots of judges and speakers was the advice to work hard on getting your image as best as it can be in the camera. That the image should already be made before you start editing it.

Now there is a lot of snobbery and ‘twue wayism’ around photography and so I quickly realised there was a balance to be had and that editing can be a powerful took to really give an image a lift but also that taking a shot that is just right, or a right as can be, is also wonderful and also means when it comes to editing you start from a stronger position.

So back to the task. I decided to combine it with some self tie rope. I was actually trying to get a different image which featured the rope and the pubes (which I did get but it needs cropping so doesn’t fit the brief) when I noticed that the tuffty threads of the rope mirrored the muffy threads of my public hair and so I set about trying to create an image that captured that.

What did I do differently knowing I couldn’t edit it? I did take a lot more pictures adjusting the angle so that I got what I wanted and didn’t need to crop and also paid attention to the light and how it was falling and adjusted the ISO to make sure it was controlled in the shot. I am fairly pleased with the result but I must admit there are a couple of minor edit I am itching to do but I resisted the urge and left it exactly as it is was in the camera.
