Yes, I appear to be back on soap box again. I apologise if the tone of things round here has become a little activist in nature but this is a topic that I feel very strongly about and am fully aware that the main stream media appears to have their own titillating moral high-ground agenda to pursue when they write about it and so I am attempting to use this space to give some sort of balance to that.
The internet changed my life. For many years I believed that the things I desired were at the very least unusual and at the worst down right weird and nasty. I had no access to information that led me to believe otherwise but then along came the internet and that changed. Suddenly I had access to a wealth of information and a community of people who ‘shared’ and/or understood my desires. It allowed me to connect with people and learn about my kink, my sexuality and my desires. Without the internet I suspect I would never have discovered my kinky self. I can’t imagine that life now, just the thought of what it might be like makes me sad.
We have been, and are, a generation blessed by that burst of knowledge. We take it for granted, it is our norm, we expect it to be here. We heap scorn on those countries that attempt to the control the internet, we view them with suspicion and caution. We know that the population of countries such a Iran and China, to name just two, are fed a diet of government controlled rhetoric. The control of information and knowledge is vital in the control of people. But hey, that is not here in the UK or Canada or America is it? We have a free open access web after all. Don’t we?
Today I read this Cameron says UK Will Block Extremist Sites: End of the Open Web? I will pause a moment for you to read and let the contents truly sink in…..
*goes off for 5 minutes to search the internet freely, while I still can….
OK, back with me now?!
Do I really need to point out the insanity in this? But just in case…. What constitutes extremist? Surely the government would see any website that supported an opposing view to their own, as extremist? Oh and lets not forget about sex, the chances are that Fetlife and Kink.com will be banned under the new ‘simulated rape porn’ legislation but just in case it isn’t this suggestion will surely deal with that oversight.
I am scared. Not just for me but for my children. As I said above we have had an Open Web and enjoyed all the benefits that come with it but if we continue to ignore things like this our children won’t have that privilege. I fear in 10 years time if my son or daughter want to find out about consensual non consent fantasies or whatever it is that tickles their kinky bones then they won’t be able to. Is that what we want? A filtered, government controlled internet? Is that really a good thing for anyone? Apart from the government that is.
If we continue to let this erosion of our freedoms continue then we are allowing a vocal minority to rule us all in order to protect their interests alone and what they are banking on most is that ‘fear’ will kept us quiet. The only fear I have is for our future and that of my children and my children’s children and I refuse to remain quiet about this ever.
How about you?
If you are in the UK PLEASE PLEASE click on the links below. One of them is for an e-petition against the proposed ban on simulated rape porn. If you believe this is anyway wrong I beg you to sign it and the other is link to a Protest in London on the 16th December regarding the same proposal. If you can come along then that would be great and if not, at the very least I ask you to spread the word.
*EDIT Since posting this it has been bought to my attention that some people are not comfortable with the wording of the current e-petition. As a result there is an alternative proposed. Please take the time to read it & make suggestions you have so that we can get together a petition that people feel comfortable supporting
Proposed New Wording Of E-Petition
CURRENT e-petition – Do Not Make Simulate Rape Porn a Criminal Offense
