I have resisted the pull of Instagram for a long time now but a certain someone (Hyacinth) finally managed to tempt me in. It is a strange place to be honest. You can’t have any female nipples or areola, definitely no cunt or any sign of pubes and the rules about bottoms seem to be that a tiny bit of string makes them acceptable, although having said that, I have a seen quite a lot of stringless bum on there so I am not sure about that one. How they implement these rules also seems to be slightly random. Last week Hyacinth had an image deleted where she had pixellated out her nipples. (You can see the full unedited version in her boobday post from last week) and yet a short video clip of a young woman laying on her bed fellating her fingers is absolutely fine because the her nipples are covered by a very sexy lacy minimal bra.
To my mind there is something much more overtly sexual and suggestive about that young woman’s video clip than there is about Hy’s shot but for Instagram the suggestion in Hy’s image that her breasts were uncovered was too much. It is a weird dichotomy in my mind when suggestions of nudity are seen as more offensive or risque than a girl sucking on her fingers or a clip showing the view from behind as a young women humps her pillow (yes I have seen that in Instagram). That is OK because she has her panties on. One has to wonder if Instagram are aware that is perfectly possible for a woman to orgasm with her panties on.
I am not knocking the women in the clips I have seen, far from it. I applaud them for enjoying, embracing, and celebrating their bodies and sexuality and finding a way to beat Instagram at its own game. What I am knocking is the way Instagram and quite frankly what feels like an ever-increasing conservative society, demonizes the naked and yet sexualises just about anything else.
I shall continue with my Instagram experiment. I have had more cock shots and suggestive private messages sent to me there in the last few weeks than I have ever had in my whole 5 years on Twitter.
If I do end up getting deleted, because from what I can make out from other women I am following on there, Instagram is trigger happy when it comes to that, then I shall probably walk away because I have better things to do with my time to be honest and I have this space where I can do exactly as a please.

I can’t work out how sites work out what is acceptable. I don’t have Instagram so can’t comment about it, but FB seems to be one of the strangest. They will quite happily allow overtly sexy images of girls wearing next to nothing yet delete posts about breastfeeding and breast cancer – even when there are no nipples on show. I also read about them not allowing someone to post info on cervical cancer. They also allow the most awful violent posts to stay.
I can’t understand why violence is also acceptable on TV and in films and yet a bit of boob or bum isn’t.

Censorship is always clumsy, at best. WordPress was always ridiculous with this as well. The condemnation of erotic images and nudity as “pornography” has always chafed me, especially when those who villify it simultaneously sexualize anything else they possibly can – because, advertising.
And don’t get me started on the glorification of violence from the same parties. Ugh. All Things Sex = BAD, but blood, gore, and gratuitous violence are okay? Grrr… It makes me stabby.

Molly, I love your post about this and everyone’s comments. Censorship online certainly does seem twisted. You can show men’s nipples but not women’s.
I just recently got a new Android phone and I’m just now learning how it all works. I’ve never had Instagram but have been thinking about it getting it. But I will do so by treading easy.
