I am a woman who loves a good list and so when I saw Jilly Boyd was doing a 101 Things in 1001 Days I was immediately drawn to the idea and yet also daunted by what seemed such a mammoth task. At first I decided to cast the idea aside but then the more I thought about it the more I found myself tempted to give it a go. In the end Rebel’s Notes can be held responsible for me attempting this as she suggested we be 101 Things in 1001 Days partners and with that offer on the table there was no way I could refuse.
The idea behind the ‘101 things’ is to make a list of 101 things (goals/achievements etc) that you would like to complete but rather than the standard year to complete it in, it is spread out over 1001 days which is roughly 2.75 years. The thinking behind this is that by giving yourself a more realistic time scale in which to achieve things you are likely to be more productive and accomplish more of your goals. The goals should be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on your part). You can find lots more about the idea behind this project and find tons of ideas if you want to start you own list on the Day Zero Project website
Writing the list was much harder than I thought it would be. The first 30 or so things just jumped right out but after that I found myself totally overwhelmed by the options and decisions and, if I am totally honest, very close to calling it quits, but you don’t have a 101 partner for nothing, or so I have found. Rebel sent me her list in progress and suddenly the ideas started to flow again as I realised that in my usual style I may have been over thinking things a bit.
Suffice to say the list is now complete and I think there might be a small chance that I am actually happy with it. You have no idea how many times I changed it and nearly driven Sir completely insane with it all. I think he will be delighted that I have finally settled on it and it is published!
The list is split into 8 groups which I think are fairly self-explanatory however some of the things on list have more than one part or are monthly, or weekly goals and so these ones have brackets beside them which show how many part there are to be completed and how many have been done so far. Obviously today all those completed numbers stand at 0 but hopefully not for long. As you will see when you read the list some of the things are fairly ambitious such as “Visit 3 US cities I have never been to before” whereas others are fairly simple “Have a manicure” (would you believe I have reached the grand old age of 40 and never had one?). I hope the mix of the two is doable, only time will tell on that front but I am very optimistic!
Rebel and I have agreed that the official start date of our lists will be tomorrow 13/01/13 which means that our end date will be October 11th 2015 (wow that sounds a long way from now doesn’t it?) You can find my full list HERE and you can see Rebel’s list HERE. Our aim is to help keep one another motivated and positive about the project as well as completing one very important goal (No. 69 on my list) together!
As time goes on I shall try to blog about the list on a semi regular basis and of course anything particularly exciting or newsworthy that arises will be reported back here as and when.
If you are completing a 101 thing in 1001 days project of your own then I have put together a page for people to link in their lists and any blog posts they make about their progress. You can find the page HERE
